Quality

  • Early season dry matter monitoring

The results of this project are reported on the industry website every two weeks and help to determine whether the fruit maturity is early or late this season.

  • Extending the marketing window

Including new avocado cultivars into the harvest season as either late or early maturing requires that the postharvest performance of the fruit be known. There will be storage trials on avocado cultivars other than Hass in the coming year.

Increasing the storage life of Hass fruit has the potential to open up new market and marketing opportunities. Hass fruit of different maturities will be stored at low temperatures (<3°C) for up to eight weeks with and without preconditioning.

  • Extending the marketing window (includes Plant and Food subcontract)

Commercial scale trials will commence on dynamic CA as a storage technology for improved storage quality or increased storage life.

  • Alternatives to Copper (includes Plant and Food subcontract and is a Sustainable Farming Fund project)

A new fungicide has been found with promise in controlling some ripe rots. This project concludes this financial year.
