What is AvoGreen®
AvoGreen® is a Pest Monitoring programme that has been tested under very high pest pressure over the last 6 years and proven to be a successful pest management tool. An auditable avocado production system, AvoGreen® is based on the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Using a combination of methods the programme aims to keep pest populations at levels below those that can cause economic loss and with careful monitoring and trace-back systems provide overall quality and safety assurances to all customers.
The information on this website has been prepared to advise growers of the programme and assist accredited growers and operators of the AvoGreen® system to make informed decisions on the management of the pest on their orchards.
Why follow the AvoGreen Programme?
The AvoGreen® programme helps growers to:
Provide an IPM system that is cost effective
Provide acceptable packout rates
Meet the Regional Council Air Plan requirements
Ensure that the ERMA requirements are met (especially HSNO regulations)
Deliver sustainable production systems
Deliver fruit that is acceptable to all markets (both in terms of phytosanitary and food safety requirements)
Definition of an IPM
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the management of pests using a combination of methods that include economic, ecological and toxicological factors while emphasising biological controls and economic thresholds. The basic components of an IPM programme include:
1. Prevention - awareness
2. Observation - monitoring
3. Intervention - when necessary
The Structure of the AvoGreen® Programme
Using IPM principles, the AGA has developed a standard to define AvoGreen® for both growers and customers. To see what is required for an avocado crop to comply with this standard click here.
The structure of the AvoGreen® system comprises:
A monitoring system (including a web-based manual)
An industry database of results
Supporting research
Website information where pest updates are provided to growers, accredited operators and monitors
Field Management - the AIC will provide field support to implement the programme
The AIC accredits the following to operate the AvoGreen® system:
Operators - businesses (for example a Packhouse) that supplies an approved service to growers
Individual pest monitors - individuals who are employed by operators and who go onto orchards to monitor pests (a grower can become an operator and a monitor)
An Auditor - an organisation capable of auditing both the proficiency of pest monitors
